Downtown Cajun Festival
Aiyeeee! Laissez les bon temps rouler y’all!
Downtown Wichita Falls Development and the Elks Lodge #1105 once again put a Texoma twist on the 8th annual Cajun Fest taking place Saturday, May 9th on Ohio Avenue between 9th and 10th in historic downtown Wichita Falls. Gates open at noon and the event will last until we shut it down! Grab your family and friends, find your old Mardi Gras beads, search for your craziest hats and Cajun attire, and then head downtown to shop, eat, play and dance!
This year, DWFD is thrilled to present three foot-stomping, heart-thumping Cajun bands. Headlining will be CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band. Leading this Grammy-nominated band is CJ Chenier, “the best living zydeco singer and accordionist” according to Living Blues magazine. Providing support will be Austin bands Dr. Zog, and Crooks. Dr. Zog is well-known for their crowd-rousing Zydeco sound, while Crooks have been making waves on the country music circuit. Starting and ending the day will be local favorites the Black and White Band and Mike O’Neill. Emceeing the event is the ever-popular Louisiana native Matt Castille, whose performance on all Cajun instruments ranging from the squeezebox to the harmonica keeps the crowd captivated for hours.
Enjoy delicious dishes ALL ranging in price from $2.00-$5.00
Cajun food is a major aspect of this event, and there will be plenty of it – so come hungry! Some of the featured delicacies will be live boiled crawfish, alligator on a stick, Cajun fried catfish, crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, boudin, pork cracklins, King Cake, and more! Food will be served throughout the event, or until it runs out – so come early! Food costs range from $2 - $5 a serving. All proceeds from Cajun food sales will go to benefit Elks Lodge #1105 charities.
Returning this year is Gator Country, best known for their CMT show Gator 911. They have also been featured on Animal Planet’s River Monsters and A&E’s Billy the Exterminator. They are bringing a hands-on Gator Show that will educate about alligators, lizards, turtles, tortoises and more. If you can brave your fears, they will have plenty of opportunities for handling and photo ops!
Last, but certainly not least, is the amazing Children’s Area! Keep your children (and kids at heart) entertained all day with our carnival rides, magician, and more!
This event is designed to bring awareness to, and help the revitalization of, historic downtown Wichita Falls. It also serves as a fundraiser for Downtown Wichita Falls Development and other nonprofits. Downtown merchants will be open for shopping on Saturday. The event lasts all day, so people are encouraged to get stamped, leave and look at surrounding museums and shops.
